Huber-Kono Aoi

Aoi Huber-Kono was born in Tokyo and graduated in art and music at the Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku. In 1960 she moved to Stockholm where she met Max Huber, whom she married in 1962. The couple settled first in Milan (1962-1970) where they formed close friendships and work relationships with artists such as Bruno Munari and Achille Castiglioni, and then in Sagno in the Ticino Canton. During this period, Aoi Huber-Kono's graphic production ranged from designs for tiles, plates and jewellery to illustrations for advertisements and magazines. In 1968 she wrote and illustrated The Big Fish (originally published for Emme Edizioni and now published by Corraini), the first in a series of works dedicated to childhood. In 1976 she held her first solo exhibition at Galerie Bettina in Zurich, which was followed by solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad. Since the 1980s she has also designed carpets, collaborating with the architect Mario Botta. In 2002 she set up the Max Huber-Kono Foundation, which aims to promote knowledge of graphic art, design, photography and visual communication. She lives and works in Novazzano.
