Olivo Barbieri was born in Carpi, Modena, in 1954. Olivo’s research initially focused on artificial lighting in European and Asian cities. Since 1989, he has often travelled to Asia and China especially. He started exhibiting in 1978 with the project Flippers. In 1982, he participated in Viaggio in Italia. In 1996, Museum Folkwang in Essen dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. In 2001, Silvana Editoriale published Virtual Truths. In 2013, Aperture published site specific_03 13. In 2015, Hatje Cantz published ERSATZ LIGHTS. In 2015, the MAXXI Museum in Rome presented his first retrospective in Italy, Images 1978-2014. Two films from his site specific_ series are part of the MoMA, New York, collection. 50 monographs and catalogues of the artist’s work have been published. Barbieri’s works are featured in museums and public and private art collections across Europe, Asia and the United States.
