Laureato in architettura al Politecnico di Milano nel 1944, si dedica fin da subito alla sperimentazione sul prodotto industriale insieme ai fratelli Livio (1911-1979) e Pier Giacomo (1913-1968), con il quale avvia uno studio professionale, prima in C.so di Porta Nuova e poi, dal 1962, in Piazza Castello, a Milano. Negli anni Quaranta attraversa un periodo di sperimentazione di forme, materiali e tecniche, pubblicando il primo progetto di design, la maniglia in alluminio “Pomolo” (1945). Nel 1950 introduce il tema del “re-design”: oggetti della tradizione ri-disegnati con lo scopo di aggiornarli sul piano comunicativo. Nascono così i tavoli “Leonardo” e “Bramante” (1950) per Zanotta e le celebri “Mezzadro” (1957) e “Sella” (1957). Diventa consulente artistico dell'ANIE e della RAI, e nel 1956 è socio fondatore di ADI. Negli stessi anni si dedica alla progettazione d'interni e all'allestimento fieristico, realizzando progetti iconici quali la Sala Movil (1953) e la sala dei prodotti chimici (1954, in collaborazione con Bruno Munari) al Padiglione Montecatini; la sezione sull’Industrial Design alla X Triennale di Milano (1954); il Padiglione ENI (1955); il cinema privato per la famiglia Rizzoli (1956); la birreria Splügen Braü (1960). Dalla scomparsa del fratello Pier Giacomo (1968) la sua produzione si sposta sempre più verso il settore dell’industrial design, nel segno di continuità e riproducibilità degli ambienti.
