Other gazes series
With Other gazes, a book series promoted by the Directorate-General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, we embark on a photographic journey through Italy’s museum landscapes: archaeological areas, house museums, monuments and museums in the most traditional sense are offered to the lens of great authors.
A series – curated by art historian Maura Picciau – to explore Italy’s lesser-known museums and places through the eyes of great photographers and the words of writers and critics, and rediscover the Italian artistic heritage with other gazes.
Paola De Pietri, a photographer known for her portrayal of the landscape, in On your granite peaks confronts a living natural environment with strong contrasts such as that of the island of Caprera, in the Maddalena archipelago, where Giuseppe Garibaldi spent 25 years devoting himself to an active and serene life. Marcello Fois delivers a delicate and autobiographical text on his first visit to Garibaldi’s museum, as a child, together with his father; Antonello Frongia, an esteemed photography critic, freely examines Paola De Pietri’s proposal.
