Inside the Rainbow
Russian children's literature 1920-1935: beautiful books, terrible times
Inside the Rainbow is a collection of children's picture books made in the Soviet Union between the 1920s and 1930s.
In the context of a shadowy and revolutionary St. Petersburg, a group of Russian writers and poets, some of the greatest of the last century, gathered together to create a new type of children's book, harbinger of dreams and expectations for a new world of adults and children free from the bitter aftertaste of ignorance. Free from the scourge of censorship, their books became a kind of paradise for learning, wit and fun.
This volume, published by Redstone press, gathers 250 magnificent examples of illustration and book design, accompanied by some beautiful English language translations of poems, stories and texts by witnesses of the Russian Revolution.
