Giovanni Colaneri
La leggenda di Colapesce
The legend of Colapesce tells of Nicholas, known as Cola, the son of a
fisherman and so good at diving to the depths of the sea that everyone called
him 'Colapesce'.
When the Emperor, jealous of his fame, challenged him to collect a series of
precious objects in deeper and deeper waters, Colapesce reached the bottom
of the sea and realised that three columns held up the whole of Sicily! Seeing
that one was about to break, threatening to sink the island, without a second
thought he replaced the damaged column. Today Colapesce is still down
there and his sacrifice has made him a hero for the whole of Sicily.
After Il roseto di Re Laurino and La rivolta delle arance, La leggenda di
Colapesce is the third book in the Storie in Viaggio (Travelling Tales) series.
A series of illustrated books to explore Italy in a new way starting
from stamps, in search of stories and legends to share beyond the local
dimension. In just a few square centimeters, the stamp encloses a story that
travels and becomes a collective heritage: hence the idea of a series of small
books to collect and send, to rediscover places we are familiar with or
discover new ones, each time inspired by a different stamp.
