tdm-6-design
TDM 6: Design

The capacity to assimilate, the curiosity and the desire to confront other languages and cultures in order to start new projects and new processes, the result of continuous and constant influence. These are key features of the our country’s design, and it is to this aptitude that Design. The Syndrome of Influence is dedicated. The volume, edited by Pierluigi Nicolin, accompanies the sixth edition of the Triennale Design Museum.

The book provides a broad overview of Italian design, and is organised into three main parts: the first (the invention of italian design) explores ten installations that the same number of contemporary designers have each dedicated to a master from the ‘50s and ‘60s; to their sensitivities, curiosities, inspirations, journeys and meetings.

The second section (creative destruction) is dedicated to the memory and legacy of the post-war masters and puts on paper stories taken from video interviews with Alessandro Mendini, Enzo Mari, Mario Bellini, Paolo Deganello, Paolo Rizzatto, Ernesto Gismondi, Alberto Alessi, Claudio Luti, Franco Raggi, Vanni Pasca, Joseph Grima and Giulio Iacchetti. The chapter sheds light on how a historic moment of crisis led to new behaviours and manufacturing innovations which ensured that design became an integral part of the Made in Italy brand. Testimonies from the protagonists of the time, and from their “heirs”, showcase the transition between the two periods of design, also evoking “creative destruction” from which, surprisingly, innovative content and the true protagonists of the third section emerge.

The third part (the new context) presents the way in which the new design brands organise themselves in the context of Made in Italy, and documents the installations dedicated to exposing the philosophies of the featured brands, the way in which they determine their production strategy, their image and the choice of the designer.

Completed with detailed photographs of all the installations, Design. The Syndrome of Influence gathers all of the curiosity and sense of adventure of the designers from the ‘50s and ‘60s together with the dynamism of contemporary design, achieving a reversal of perspective that aims to x-ray Italian design in the convergence of different points of view who built and defined it.
