Restart

“Why do we still make new furniture when there are still plenty of very functional old pieces around?” That seems like an abstract question to me. The process of devising forms, carried out by human beings, is endless: it has always happened, it is still happening today, and it will continue to happen. At every moment in civilisation it might be said that: “We already have everything”. Alessandro Mendini, 1981

There are objects coming from planning and mental processes, production procedures and traditions of the past that have been subsided by time. Now, the look isolates and packs these objects into “memory kits”, it chooses and juxtaposes them creating a very new context around. It’s not meant to be a research of impulses to get new design shapes (they don’t lack in contemporary design landscape) but an observation and a restart of indelible objects and situations to produce short-circuits with the present, dialogues between the “no more” and the “not yet”.

From the luxury production to the “anonymous design” objects, revealed by Munari and used as a suggestion archive by Castiglioni, RESTART is the explanation of this project and the research that inspired it. RESTART: begin again, set back in motion, start something up again: in other words, it does not start again from scratch, but from something that already exists and have had an own history. RESTART aims to recognize the indispensable and make it dialogue, reappropriate it in a very personal way.
