Dorazio Piero

Piero Dorazio, an abstract Roman painter, was among the promoters of the Forma 1 group and among the signatories of the relative manifesto, published in the magazine of the same name in 1947. In the same year he went to Paris after winning a scholarship. In the French capital he met Braque and other protagonists of avant-garde art thanks to Gino Severini. His artistic research explored the possibility of constructing works through lines of force, which initially derived from his encounters with the Futurists, and then become vast reticular compositions.

In 1948 he was invited, when still very young, to the V Quadrenniale in Rome. In the same period, together with Achille Perilli and Giovanni Guerrini, he founded the L'Age d'Or bookshop-gallery, which then merged with the Origine group, which included, among others, Alberto Burri and Ettore Colla.
The Fondazione Origine was born from the union of the two groups. In 1954 he participated with a large mural composition at the Triennale di Milano. He organised various exhibitions of abstract art in Rome, in 1956 and 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and in 1960 the event dedicated a personal room to him. In 1959 he participated in Documenta 2 in Kassel, in 1961 he won the prize at the Paris Biennale, which he refused to accept in protest of the French policy in Algeria. After a retrospective exhibition in Dusseldorf, he was invited to join the Zero Group. In 1968 he took part in the student protests in Rome and Berlin. After several stays in the United States and many trips, he settled in the Roman countryside and later in Todi, where he tried his hand as a potter among other things.

In 1979 the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris dedicated the first major retrospective to him, which was then presented in the United States.

In 1986 he was awarded the prize by the Accademia di San Luca, two years later he was invited again to exhibit in a personal room at the Venice Biennale. Extensive exhibitions have been dedicated to him over the following years including, among others, the IVAM in Valencia and the Museion in Bolzano.
