Kuno Prey – first a designer, then a professor, founder of the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano – is convinced that only those who gain first-hand experience of design will be able to pass on their skills to younger people. This book recounts his journey via a series of student projects, as well as exhibitions, competitions, objects that he designed himself and contributions from international players in the design world.
Designing Designers explores a new territory, halfway between a design manual and a coming-of-age “novel”: the initial part consisting of “stories”,
written by Kuno Prey and Beppe Finessi, is followed by eight chapters, each one dedicated to a different activity or a specific practice that Kuno was involved in. They aim to present what it means for him to tackle – as dean, lecturer and designer– a semester project, a thesis, a workshop, an exhibition or event, a scouting project, a competition, an idea – in a constant dialogue between design and teaching, as is typical of his work.

With texts by: Alberto Alessi, Aldo Cibic, Beppe Finessi, Alexis Georgacopoulos, Hans Leo Höger, Petra Hölscher, Giulio Iacchetti, Alvise Mattozzi, Studio Mut, Reinhard Pascher, Kuno Prey, Elisa Testori, Arnout Visser
