Although there have been times when the relationship between the Church and the creative talents (architects, designers, artists) was fundamental and widespread, today this connection is nothing short of strenuous. For this very reason, we must return to discuss design in sacred art, with examples of projects that successfully combine aesthetics and the search for meaning. So we asked five renowned Italian designers to create a chalice. Why a chalice? Not only because it is the most sacred vessel in Eucharistic liturgy, but also because it has an easily communicable shape that goes beyond personal affiliations and religious knowledge. And finally, Why these five designers? Because Antonia Astori, Riccardo Dalisi, Michele De Lucchi, Alessandro Mendini and Paolo Rizzatto have the extraordinary experience and expertise attributable only to masters (capable of dealing with complex and deeply rooted themes, simultaneously rich in symbolic reference and in functional specificity). And because in their designs we can recognise the desire to create meaningful objects intended to last: they have skillset necessary to take on the challenge of designing a new chalice.
