Before the drawing

How important is the sign for the drawing? With this question Bruno Munari opens Before the drawing, an issue belonging to the Block Notes series, created by Munari for Corraini in 1992: a free collection of projects with creative implications. A collection of ideas and examples of artistic work as input for everyone's "intellectual playing", recognizable in its graphic design through its grey covers, the pocket format and the holes on the cover, which urge the reader to browse through the book.

In this volume, the sign becomes the signature of the most free experimentation, accompanied by captions in Italian, English, French and German.

The pencil's markings left almost free on paper make this book a family album; a collection of all the portraits of that ink sign which on paper becomes the start of a meadow, a poisonous insect, a spinning top that turns while standing still.
