Alessio D’Ellena
City Speller: Milan
Abbecedario città: Milano
The City Speller by Alessio D’Ellena is back again. This time focussing on Milan.
Rather than simply setting out a list (A,B,C, etc. , ) of historic buildings, neighbourhoods, parks, buildings or streets, the book, like the one on Rome, is a collection of places that make the city what it is. Unlike the traditional guidebooks it takes a look at places not usually on the typical tourist route. For example, alongside the Brera art gallery is the Idroscalo (an artificial lake), together with the Scala theatre, the old Pirelli cooling tower and so on, thereby reflecting the various different nuances that form the identity of the city.
At the end of the book an alphabet details the curiosities behind the place names and positions them on a special geographical map. It’s like a new and exciting tour of Milan in the fast lane!
